Kabul - Afghan and US special forces have freed 40 Afghan inmates from a prison run by the Taliban, the military said on Friday.
The special forces flew in helicopters to the site in southern Helmand province to carry out the operation on Thursday evening, the US Army said in the Afghan capital Kabul.
The prisoners, Afghan soldiers and police officers, were taken to a military hospital. It was not clear when or where they were taken prisoner.
The military did not say whether anyone was injured or killed during the operation in the hard-fought district of Nausad.
A spokesperson said that appropriate force had been used and that the mission had been carried out successfully.
Extremists attack the security forces in Afghanistan almost daily. Soldiers and police offers are constantly being taken prisoner and abducted.
